Setting up shop...
Ok... So...
I'm setting up shop. Got all the equipment I needed, and now am working on getting all of the required licenses and permits to get my business started.
I'm in the process of getting my Fur Dealers License. I have to have one to be able to buy green specimens. I was considering getting a Trappers License to be able to pick up road kill in California. But the cost is too much for me to only pick up road kill. I'd have to actually trap to make a profit, and that's just not my thing. I don't mind it, I just can't see myself trapping.
I was able to find a game breeder that knows my grandpa. I've since gotten a trio of Japanese quail to breed. I'll be getting Chukkar and Valley Quail eggs from the same person. Ever since I was little my grandpa has raised game birds, so I know how to raise poultry, and plan on using the birds to breed for taxidermy specimens, and for their meat, since I'm not a big fan of wasting....
I love taxidermy in general. So I can't see myself focusing on one thing. I enjoyed the fish because of all of the airbrushing. I liked the upland game birds and ducks because they're so beautiful when mounted. I loved game heads because of all of the sculpting involved, and I enjoyed the Life-size because they really come back to life with all the alterations that you have to make. I don't really have a favorite, since they all involve a lot of different techniques.
I'm still getting the shop put together. I've got all of the stuff I need, such as desks, tables, and storage areas. I bought all of the equipment I need to actually do taxidermy. There's just getting the fleshers 100% ready to go, and setting up the show room and office, which means I have to get all of the stuff that's being stored there out. Fun.
I've been drawing up my logo, so I can get my business cards out there. I'm leaning towards an antelope, a mulie, a bird of some type, and a Brookie... Don't know if I'm positive about my design yet or not. We'll see how it looks all prettied up.
I've got some stuff in my freezer. A mixed breed chicken that died on our farm, looks like a Rhode Island cross., a Holland Lop rabbit that also passed away on the farm, and a Rainbow Trout. don't know if I'll ever get around to skinning and mounting any of it. Just kidding...
Well, that's it for now... More when I think of it.
